S6. The Expanding Universe

In 1929, astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered that many ‘stars’ were actually galaxies and then he discovered that most galaxies were moving away from us indicating that the universe is expanding.

10 times the Bible speaks of God stretching out the heavens. Here are two examples:

Job 9:8

He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.

Jeremiah 10:12

But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.

Modern Science now agrees that the universe is expanding and it will have an end to it’s ability to sustain life.

Please understand that I am in no way claiming that the Bible is a scientific document, but I am saying that this expanding of the universe, the stretching of the heavens was something that we discovered to be true in 1929, yet written about even in the oldest of the biblical books (Job).

According to Hugh Ross it wasn’t until the 12th century that any scientist even hinted at the possibility of an expanding universe in his book “Hidden Treasures in the Book of Job. How The Oldest Book in the Bible Answer’s Today’s Scientific Questions.” This is another great book worth reading if you would like to know more.
